Does a bidet actually pay for itself?
A bidet a day keeps the paper aisle away.
Almost nobody buys a bidet to save money. They buy one to be cleaner, and rinsing with water does that in a way dry paper does not pretend to. The money is just the part nobody bothers to check: a household of four gets through something like three hundred rolls of toilet paper a year, about $340 of it, in increments small enough that it never registers. A basic attachment costs about $25 and takes most of that away, so it pays for itself in a month or two and keeps paying afterward.
Some of what sits behind that figure matters a great deal and some of it turns out not to, so before anything else:
- Running a bidet costs about $8 a year in water and sewer, and the emergency store runs it saves are worth about $1. Neither is large enough to move the result.
- Buy store brand at 45 cents a roll and the saving drops by 60 percent, pushing payback from about a month out to three.
- A $450 electric seat plus $150 of wiring takes about two and a half years, and a wired seat does not leave with you at the end of a lease.
- Everything above depends on one number: how much paper you actually stop buying. Nobody stops entirely, because you still have to dry off.

What moves the answer
The table gives every term a value. This ranks them, by moving each input ±20% with the others held still and measuring how far the ten-year total shifts. Long bars mark the assumptions to check against your own receipts. The short ones can take any value you like without changing the outcome.
How this works
The ranking above says which numbers matter. Here is where each of them came from and which way the default leans, followed by the things left out of the model altogether and, at the end, the households this whole calculation does not work for.
Paper
The saving is your annual paper spend multiplied by the slider and nothing else, which is why the slider outranks everything on the sensitivity list. At 50% the total still comes out positive for the default household, though a small household buying cheap paper can land the other way.
Fuel
The same slider scales this one, since the runs a bidet prevents are the ones where the house had already run out. It lands near a dollar a year.
Water
Roughly 0.10–0.15 gal (0.4–0.6 L) a use, billed at a rate that includes sewer. At the default of three uses per person per day it comes to about $8 a year for four people, and at one use a day it is under $3.
The two estimates
Each gets its own row in the breakdown, so you can see how much of the total is guesswork. The kid incident applies to year one only. Payback is walked month by month rather than divided out of an annual average, so a front-loaded cost moves the date by the right amount.
Not included
Plumbing failure risk, your time, resale value, septic pump-out intervals, water heating on a warm-water unit, and the environmental case. Septic is real money for rural households and deserves its own arithmetic.
Reasons it may not pay
All of the above assumes a household that looks something like the defaults. Six things commonly break that assumption, and any one of them can turn the answer around.
Cheap paper. The saving is paper spend times the slider, so a household buying store brand in bulk at $0.45 a roll has roughly a third of the saving the defaults assume, and the same hardware cost. Payback stretches accordingly.
An electric seat. At $450 plus $150 for an electrician, payback runs about 2.4 years on the default household, against about a month for a $25 attachment. The extra cost buys warm water, a heated seat and a dryer, none of which change the paper saving.
Renting. An attachment is removable and travels, but a seat wired to a new outlet generally is not, and some leases forbid touching the supply line at all. A unit left behind at the end of a lease never reaches the payback date computed above.
The plumbing. The install assumes a working shutoff valve behind the toilet with a standard fitting. Seized valves, in-wall valves and non-standard fittings turn twenty minutes into a plumber's visit, and that fee goes in the install field.
Drying habits. Where a household lands in the 60–90% range is decided by how much paper is still used to dry. Someone who uses a generous wad rather than a few squares may be nearer 40–50%, and every figure on the page falls with the slider.
Cold water, for the people who do not get used to it. Most do, within a week or two. Some never do, and an unheated bathroom in February is the case where it matters. The fix is a warm-water attachment at $100–160 or a heated seat, and either one moves the payback date, so it belongs in the arithmetic rather than in a footnote.
Other considerations
Two things a bidet does are not savings at all, and one of them is the reason most people buy one. Getting clean with water rather than dry paper is a difference people notice immediately and rarely go back on, and it matters more than usual to anyone dealing with hemorrhoids, a recent operation or limited reach. None of that is money, so none of it is in the totals above. It is also the part that decides most purchases, which is worth saying plainly on a page that spends the rest of its length counting dollars.
One thing a bidet does is not really a saving at all. Toilet paper is the first thing to vanish from the shelves in a scare, as it did nationally in 2020, and what is left gets expensive. A household that has largely stopped buying it cannot be charged that premium. The figure below is included because the money is real, but it sits apart from the rest because it prices a risk rather than a bill.

Portable, for travel $10–30
A squeeze bottle with an angled nozzle, or a battery version that runs off a USB charge. It fits in a bag, needs no plumbing and no landlord's permission, and it is the cheapest way to find out whether you like the idea at all before touching a shutoff valve. It is also the only option that travels, which matters if the reason you are reading this is a hotel or a long drive.
No button for this one, because the figures on this page assume a fitted unit. A portable does not displace much household paper on its own, so pricing it in the calculator would produce a payback that never arrives.

What fitting one actually involves
A cold-water attachment is a twenty to thirty minute job and needs an adjustable wrench. Turn off the shutoff valve behind the toilet, flush to empty the tank, unhook the fill hose, unbolt the seat, lay the plate over the bowl rim and bolt the seat back down on top of it, then run the supplied hose from the tee at the tank inlet to the sprayer. Nothing is cut and nothing is glued, so it comes off again in about ten minutes.
A warm-water attachment is the same fitting plus a hose run to the hot line under the sink, which turns it into an hour or so and means working in a cabinet. An electric seat mounts the same way, but it has to reach a grounded outlet. Bathrooms built before those were required often have none within reach of the toilet, and adding one is an electrician's job and a permit in some places. That, rather than the seat, is what makes the electric option expensive.
Three things turn twenty minutes into a call-out, and all three are worth checking before you order anything. A shutoff valve that has not moved in fifteen years may not move now, and may weep once it does. Some older buildings put the stop inside the wall with nothing accessible behind the toilet. And imported or older toilets sometimes use fittings the supplied hose does not match, which is a five dollar adapter if you know before you start and a second trip if you do not.
Renting is mostly fine with an attachment. Keep the original fill hose in the box, because that is what makes the whole thing reversible on the day you leave.
The two things people ask before buying
The first is how hard it sprays. Every attachment worth having carries a pressure dial, and it arrives at the bottom of its range. Open it slowly on the first use and settle where you like it. The dial is also what makes a household with children manageable, since it can be turned down and left there.
The second is the cold, and it is the more common complaint. A plain attachment delivers water at whatever temperature the supply line is holding, which in winter is genuinely cold. Most people report that they stop noticing within a week or two. If you are confident you will not, the warm-water version costs $100–160 rather than $25–80, and that difference belongs in the hardware field above rather than in a decision made afterward.
Our bias, stated plainly
Anyone publishing a calculator that concludes you should buy something has an interest in that conclusion, and you should read it accordingly.
Where the model had a choice between two defensible values, it took the one less favorable to the bidet: paper reduction is capped by the slider rather than assumed total, water is billed with sewer at about three times typical usage, and the kid incident is charged to year one in full rather than spread across the life of the unit. Every one of those values is editable.
